This bronze plaque appears on the front of the Willard Hotel and honors the memory of Julia Ward Howe, who wrote her stirring song "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" while staying at the Willard. The song went on to become the anthem of the Union Army during the American Civil War. The Howe plaque was placed here by the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic.
