Subject: River Horse Year: 1992 Sculptor: Unknown Location: Foggy Bottom ( H & 21st ) This is one of the most whimsical statues in Washington. It was a gift of the George Washington University Class of 1999. It depicts a small hippopotamus. According to the dedicatory plaque, hippopotami used to frolic along the banks of the Potomac River and often entertained the guests at Mount Vernon. Photos and text copyright © 2001 Jean K.
