Statue / monument of George H. Thomas in Washington DC by Sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward  Subject: George H. Thomas
 Year: 1879
 Sculptor: John Quincy Adams Ward
 Location: Thomas Circle
( Massachusetts Ave. & 14th )

This statue is considered by some to be the finest equestrian statue in the city. It was funded by the Society of the Army of the Cumberland, which Thomas (1816-1870) commanded upon his promotion to brigadier general.

Although he was a Virginian, Thomas remained with the Union Army when the Civil War began and became a hero of the Battle of Chickamauga which prevented a major Union defeat.
