Samuel Gompers (1850-1924) was born in London, England and emigrated to the United States in 1863. He trained as a cigar maker and joined the Cigarmaker's International Union. He became active in union politics and the labor movement.

Originally a Marxist, he became an advocate of "business unionism." He helped to found the American Federation of Labor and served as its first president.
