Subject: William F. Allen Year: 0 Sculptor: Unknown Location: Union Station ( Massachusetts Ave. & 1st ) The West Hall of Union Station contains a number of unusual memorial plaques. This one honors William Frederick Allen, a railroad magnate, civil engineer, general secretary American Railroad Association, and member of the permanent comission of the International Railway Congress. His lasting contribution was the development of the standardized system of time and time zones. First used in the United States in 1883 it has been adopted throughout the world.
