The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial honors those in U.S. law enforcement who gave their lives in the line of duty. It includes officers at the federal, state, and local levels. The names of officers honored are engraved on two low circular walls around the perimeter of the memorial. The north and south sides of the memorials include statues of lions. The male lion symbolizes the protection element of law enforcement -- strong and forceful in the pursuit of order. The female lion symbolizes the peacekeeping element of law enforcement -- protective of families and citizens.
